Every long historical series eventually reaches the point where the supporting characters start demanding their own rooms, their own histories, and possibly their own small wars. A Dozen Bakers by Peter Youds is exactly that sort of volume: a companion collection of thirteen short stories from the Ties of Blood world, filling in gaps, back-stories, side-roads, and those inconvenient human details that the main novels had no time to stop and unpack.

Despite the title, this is not a cosy book about bread, unless the bread has been marched across Europe under military discipline. The “dozen” here is a baker’s dozen, meaning thirteen tales, which is either generosity or a warning that history never stops at a sensible number.

The stories cover around thirty years and move across half a dozen European countries, which is efficient work for a single volume. Familiar figures from the series appear in new lights, with pasts, loyalties, regrets, and dramatic encounters given room to breathe. Some tales add depth to known characters, while others stand neatly on their own for readers willing to enter the world by a side door rather than the grand front entrance.

As with Youds’ other Bicorn titles, this is independent historical fiction with a sincere sense of scope: armies, families, reputations, memory, conflict, and the long shadow cast by choices made years before. It has the feel of an author still happily furnishing his own fictional universe, polishing the silver, moving the portraits, and occasionally revealing that someone in the background had a far more complicated life than previously advertised.

This 2018 Bicorn edition, in good condition, is a solid copy of a niche historical-fiction companion volume. It will particularly suit readers already following the Ties of Blood series, but the self-contained story structure means it can also serve as a sampler for the curious.

Ideal for lovers of Napoleonic-era fiction, family sagas, military back-stories, and independent historical novels with more connective tissue than a regimental archive. A Dozen Bakers proves that even when the main campaign pauses, there is always another character somewhere in Europe having a formative experience.
